« Entry 5: Two Paragraphs Again | Main

Entry 6-URLs for Research

Hi all:

Please enter in the comment below a couple of URLs for sites that illustrate or give information about the topic you think you may research.

For example:  pick cigarettes (sale of cigarettes to young women)

                     Twitter (another social networking site)

Celebrity (some links to celebrity sites as illustration)

Or: a URL link to a site with information on a subject (Organic foods)(are they organic)

Write a few words in the comment to give a sense of what the URLs are about.

Also for Monday, please download and run off hard copy from parts of two articles accessed through the library.  Not the whole articles, the first page maybe, or the abstract, if the article has one, that will give some sense of the topic you are looking into.

We will discuss topics further in class Monday.

See you then....Nick

http://www.radicalleft.net/blog/_archives/2008/2/8/3510454.html

this site gave me some information to help me start thinking about what aspects of porn I want to talk about. It discusses how porn makes sex into consumption. This has been aided by the mass-production of VHS and DVD players and now the internet. Now anyone can type in porn into google and get instant porn, without restrictions.

http://www.encyclopedia.com/doc/1G1-64698519.html

This site discusses the negative side of pornography: violence towards women. Is porn more than just a sexual experience? Do men use it as a way to make themselves feel better about their sex by objectifying women? This study analyses the amount of sexual violence in porn media and develops theories. Perhaps there is more violence because consumers get bored easily and need more exciting porn. They also suggest violence towards women has turned into a currency that men compete for to become proud of themselves.

http://www.popmatters.com/columns/horning/050309.shtml

This site gave me information about consumption in general and how consumerism gave birth to a new hedonism. Consumer culture gives the illusion of control (in my case, control over sexual desires in that one can fulfill them at the click of a mouse). It also discusses porn itself "Pornography coincides with the animating principle of most contemporary advertising: "sex sells". Each extends the efficacy of the other: masturbation to porn reinforces the payoff implied in sexualized ads, which in turn promote imaginative control over objectified sex as the most epicurean of consumer pleasures. Pornography, then, is the prototype, the übercommodity, the commodity that enables all other commodities to be granted an aura of sexual appeal." This makes me think I chose a great topic!!

As tourism industry expands and as the wealthy citizens of the Global North enjoy increased leisure time and recreation, another form of leisure activity has emerged. Sex tourism, a multibillion dollar trade that allows tourists to engage in sexual acts without fear of legal litigation from the host country or even in some cases their own. The growth of sex tourism is a factor in the growth of illegal human trafficking, especially for sexual purposes. Even more disturbingly, sex tourism has altered its image in order to appeal to a larger audience of tourists by encouraging fetishism, pedophilia and rape.

Research paper topic: Female Nude portrayed as an art form or a sex icon

The Female Nude in Public Art: Constructing Women’s Sexual Identity in the Visual Arts. Mary Kenon Breazeale. Frontiers: A Journal of Women Studies, Vol. 9, No. 1 (1986), pp. 56-65.

 Discusses the debate women have with the way the public portrays the female image. This debate led to questions about how the visual culture makes use of women’s bodies. The article also discusses women sculptures and when it is appropriate to have the female body unclothed. It states that the female body has a powerful erotic impact, which can be dangerous.

The Female Nude: Pornography, Art, and Sexuality. Lynda Nead. Signs, Vol. 15, No. 2 (Winter, 1990), pp. 323-335.

 This article talks about the authors viewpoints on the existence of the female nude as an art form. The female nude is a natural commodity. One of the primary goals of the female nude has been the containment and regulation of the female sexual body. Much controversy has gone on when trying to decipher the nude between pornography. The whole idea of the female body is under the act of framing. It seems to offer a certain kind of liberation; a way for women to develop their muscularity and physical strength.

http://www.femalefirst.co.uk/entertainment/Bollywood-4334.html

 this website is about the release of Bollywood movies. It wonders what women think about the amount of nudity on screen, and wonders if Bollywood is biased towards female nudity by portraying them as sex objects.

I'm thinking of researching a particular fashion brand and its evolutionary history, as well as its connection to the psyche or to the idea of social classes.

I had thought of researching either Louis Vuitton, Tom Ford (the designer by himself, as well as his work with other brands), or Burberry.

I have found a few articles to help me begin the research process:

In my paper, I am going to look at the means in which advertisers appeal to children and create consumers out of even the youngest of children and the overall effect of advertising and the consumer society on the child.

The Other "Child Study": Figuring Children as Consumers in Market Research, 1910s-1990s
Author(s): Daniel Thomas Cook
Source: The Sociological Quarterly, Vol. 41, No. 3, (Summer, 2000), pp. 487-507
http://www.jstor.org/stable/4121388

This article discusses how our society creates a need for children to be individualized, and to reach this individuality in a consumer society, advertising teaches children to use merchandise as the vehicle for self-expression.

Selling to Children: Fair Play in TV Commercials
Author(s): John Culkin
Source: The Hastings Center Report, Vol. 8, No. 3, (Jun., 1978), pp. 7-9
http://www.jstor.org/stable/3560420

This articles discusses the ways in which parents are targeted as customers through their children and the controversy over playing off of childrens' naivetes to sell products.

Some Unintended Consequences of TV Advertising to Children
Author(s): Marvin E. Goldberg and Gerald J. Gorn
Source: The Journal of Consumer Research, Vol. 5, No. 1, (Jun., 1978), pp. 22-29 http://www.jstor.org/stable/2488960

This article studies how advertising has created a society of dissatisfied individuals, never able to achieve the high standards set out by advertisers, which starts with the youngest of children, in this case preschoolers. Advertising gives rise to conflicts between children and parents, the decaying of social relationships in favor of materialism, and an overall lack of true happiness since despite what advertisers want you to think, material goods cannot create happiness.

Topic: The Portrayal of Women in Advertising reinforces "traditional" stereotypes and negative body image.

-Ads in magazines primarily use models who largely misrepresent society's population of women, which, in turn, reinforces bad body image and promotes an unrealistic ideal for girls and women of all ages.

-Celebrities influence standards of health and beauty but have major advantages such as excess money to afford personal chefs and trainers.

- This article compares US advertising to Mexico's and Australia's to reveal many differences in the television portrayal of the sexes. The study finds stereotypes in each country but they are conveyed in distinctly different ways.

2.http://scholar.google.com/scholar?hl=en&lr=&q=info:zGfTUBBvMiYJ:scholar.google.com/&output=viewport
-This article determines whether women's portrayal in tv ads has changed much in the past 15 years.

3.http://www.jstor.org/sici?sici=0022-2437(197102)8%3A1%3C92%3AAWPAAO%3E2.0.CO%3B2-I
-This article argues that many critics believe women portray very limited and negative stereotypes within advertisements. It pays particular attention to occupational and nonworking roles of men and women. Their findings show that women are rarely depicted in working roles.

4.http://psp.sagepub.com/cgi/content/abstract/25/8/1049
- This study examines whether tv ads portraying women as sex objects causes increased body dissatisfaction among men and women. The findings show that women exposed to sexist ads judged their body size as being larger and that there was a greater discrepancy between their actual and ideal body sizes than women exposed to nonsexist or no ad condition.

Research topic: Advertisement and Credit Cards

https://home.americanexpress.com/home/mt_personal.shtml?
This is the official American Express website that advertises the different cards they offer. I found quite interesting the number of cards and bonuses they have. My purpose is to identify how advertisement promotes credit cards.

http://www.snopes.com/business/bank/blackcard.asp
The website describes the advantages of the Black American Express card. Additionally it explains privilege celebrities have using the card. I find this to be their greatest advertisement.

http://www.discovercard.com/
This card is one of my personal favorites it advertisement states, "Earn miles on all your purchases, travel with no restrictions, Redeem faster with no options, No annual fee, 0% APR on purchases and balance transfers." Personally, I own one of these and I am interested in researching on how advertisement affects young adults.

My research topic is about cell phones and their effect on society. I will also talk about how cell phone companies market themselves toward the everyday consumer. Here are a couple of possible sources for my paper:

Goggin, G. (2006). Cell Phone Culture: Mobile Technology in Everyday Life. London and
New York: Routledge Taylor & Francis Group.

Gogging explains how cell phones affect culture. He looks at the way cell phones have embedded themselves in our lives. This book is valuable reference for those seeking a comprehensive history of cell phone use.

http://pewresearch.org/pubs/216/cell-phone-society

I found this article interesting because it approaches the issue of how cell phones have shaped the way we schedule our lives around our cell phone plans. Specifically, the way/time we communicate with people is contingent upon our cell phone plan.

Topic: consumer addiction

http://www.alternet.org/healthwellness/82013/
In this article, it gives the authors reason why people are addicted to consuming materials. He believes it is due to the fact that they are unhappy with their lives. I enjoyed this article because at the end it had many blogs and other people’s views and opinions.

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2005/12/07/earlyshow/living/ConsumerWatch/main1103331.shtml
In this article is talks about how people are addicted to shopping because of the “rush” they get when they shop. Apparently the brain releases chemicals in which identify because pleasure and pain. Since shopping feels like a positive sensation for some, they wish to repeat it.

http://ajp.psychiatryonline.org/cgi/content/full/163/10/1670
In this article it talks about if there really is such thing as being a “compulsive buyer.” It talks about how there can be many other things leading up to why people are compulsive buyers or goods. It talks about how this is a controversial issue because some think that people need help, others believe that it is just a trait and people should not be medicated for it.

I am doing my paper on the drug industry, in particular the prescription medicine industry and how they spend millions of dollars on marketing. This can be crossed with the question of whether that money should be spent on producing cheaper, more effective and safe medicines instead. I also want to touch on the prescription drug companies in competition with the black market and illegal narcotics trade.

http://www.jstor.org.proxy.library.ucsb.edu:2048/action/showArticle?doi=10.2307/3203468&Search=yes&term=drugs&term=prescription&item=21&returnArticleService=showArticle&ttl=7713&searchUri=%2Faction%2FdoBasicSearch%3FQuery%3Dprescription%2Bdrugs%26gw%3Djtx%26prq%3Dprescription%2Bdrug%2Bindustry%26hp%3D25

Whether or not the prescription drug companies various sales events and marketing to doctors has an effect on how a doctor treats a patient.

http://www.usdoj.gov/dea/concern/oxycodone.html

DEA's website about the dangers of oxycontin, an expensive and legal drug that is widely prescribed and even more widely abused.

http://www.usdoj.gov/dea/concern/marijuana.html

Conversely, the DEA's website on the illegal drug marijuana asserts that it has no medicinal value.

Prescription drugs in pill form are easy and very cheap to produce. These companies are making millions of dollars in profit and us normal citizens are the ones getting hurt by it because doctors and insurance companies make their decisions based on money rather than what is best for the patient.

these are weight loss sites that constantly tell the potential consumer that they are unattractive but they can be attractive if they buy the product and then will be happier. the last one is a nutrisystem commercial aimed at men. its interesting that body distortion marketing is now being aimed at men as well.

I'm doing something with social networking sites, might end up working on the movement of trends in response to the interconnectedness web established by them. Either way, it's gonna be fucking sweet.

This article presents many statistics about the affects of alcohol advertising for underage viewers. It was particularly helpful because it offered an abundance of evidence, through the use of studies, that demonstrate the damaging effects of alcohol advertising that is aimed toward our nation’s youth.

http://www.stats.org/stories/targeting_youth_aug1_06.htm

This site was interesting because it discussed alcohol advertising targeted toward youth specifically in the domain of magazine advertisements. Magazines are certainly only one of the many media outlets that offer alcohol advertisements to underage drinkers, and I am interested in possibly researching a number of the different outlets of this type of advertising and comparing the effects that each may have on underage drinking.

http://www.stanford.edu/class/linguist34/advertisements/alcohol%20ads/index.htm

This site is contains a compilation of 55 images of alcohol advertisements taken from a variety of magazines. It demonstrates how these ads rely on images that teens find particularly appealing, including “friendship, prestige, sex appeal, and fun”. Not only are these photos compelling evidence for the arguments made in the research I have done so far, I also plan to use some of these images in my presentation.
